Michael Bay on formats/ My opinion on formats

Michael Bay's views on the "Format Wars"

Now I personally don't care about what Bay thinks at all. I'm not that big a fan of his movies (recently at least). I feel he uses way too many spontaneous explosions and focuses on stupid story lines and cheesy humor. However, he does make a few good points in this article. Who knows if any of this is true though. Notably:

According to him, Microsoft is not really for the HD DVD format. Bay reasoned that what big MS really wants is for the market to shift to digital download and the current format war is nothing but a diversion to create confusion among consumers. Bay further explained:

What you don't understand is corporate politics. Microsoft wants both formats to fail so they can be heroes and make the world move to digital downloads. That is the dirty secret no one is talking about.

That is why Microsoft is handing out US$ 100 million dollar checks to studios just embrace the HD DVD and not the leading, and superior Blu Ray. They want confusion in the market until they perfect the digital downloads. Time will tell and you will see the truth.

I think this format debacle is really just a stopover for another medium and both companies will have the same end success as LaserDisc. The future of video lies in solid state flash medium. Movies will come in the highest definition on a small memory chip much like Nintendo DS games. With this system, there will be no breaking or scratching of discs, cheaper production costs, faster loading, and finally cheaper for the consumer. Every single aspect will become better. It's hard, but I'm trying not to get caught up in the wackness, yes wackness, of this confusing, and expensive format war.

P.S. - Blu-Ray is better. I mean, who wants something called HD-DVD when the other product is spelled incorrectly. It's obviously cooler because it doesn't play by the rules. Plus, I thought regular DVDs were supposed to be high definition. At least that what they told me when I was buying them before. Haha, I guess thats just how it goes. We'll see what we get screwed by next time.
